Nick Mass: The Heartbreakers

01.12.2024 – 02.09.2024

BICA School Project Space

Opening Reception Friday, January 12, 7-10 PM

The Heartbreakers is an exhibition of Nick Mass’s recent experiments in collage, created from the scrap pieces from another series of works, the Puzzle Project, exhibited at The Crucible in 2023. Using the cuttings from his puzzle paintings as the basis for anthropomorphic collaged figures, often with exaggerated body parts and set in relatable scenes, these charming figures are a means for the artist to contemplate his relationships, physical needs, and love.

The Heartbreakers is me exploring ideas of sexuality, loneliness, and misunderstanding. With these scrap figures, I’m trying to work through feelings about yearning for others/else while in relationships, objectification of people of all genders, and my own fears of commitment. At the end of the day, this work is also about love.”

Through his work and across mediums of visual art, writing, and music, he explores themes of confused emotions, mental health, sexuality, relationships, connectivity, home life, and the building of life brick by brick. In the spirit of connecting all his creative projects, the opening will also serve as the release his debut EP, Cigarette Vending Machine. The opening will also feature a performance of songs from the new EP, food he’s made for his audience, and we wouldn’t be surprised if other aspects of his creative life make an appearance as well.

Nick Mass is a multimedia artist from Buffalo, NY. Self-described as a “Rapper, Painter, Creative, dude” he tries to express himself in any way he can. Some hats he wears on and off include improv comedian, video editor, website/social media designer, collage cutter, instant photographer, event curator, clothing brand owner, rapper, poet, horrible no-good football player, and home cook. Before this exhibition, he had a solo show at The Crucible Art Collective, Puzzles and Pieces, and he is currently a resident at Hunt Gallery. Mass is a member of BICA School and has studied Fine Arts at Niagara County Community College.
