In parting, Morgan Strahorn brings domestic forms into conversation with ancestral presence through a series of sculptural birdhouses.

Made from wood and loosely based on the human figure, the sculptures borrow their verticality from trees and light posts: fixed structures connected to larger networks that are mostly out of sight. Their simple forms move between the familiarity of children’s toys and the spare precision of minimalist design.

Birds provide another kind of connection. By making structures intended for birds to enter, leave, inhabit, and sing from, Strahorn uses flight and song to think about ancestral voice and the ways presence can be felt without being seen.

The installation draws particular inspiration from Aracelis Girmay’s poetry collection Green of All Heads. 

About the Artist

Morgan Strahorn is a multimedia artist. Their work reflects an interest in weaving personal and public histories. Often using the family archive as a starting point, Strahorn highlights familial dynamics as they relate to race, gender, and the state. They hold a BFA in Printmaking from Maryland Institute College of Art and are currently working towards an MFA at Carnegie Mellon University.
